Night Two: Two Good to be True

I love living in “Bush’s America”. I know I said I would forget about the politics but this really pissed me off. I was getting all set to watch Private Ryan on primetime American Television and then the Marxist overlords came on and said “Private Ryan will not be seen in some markets because they are afraid of FCC fines!”. God Bless Free Speech, it was great while it lasted. So hopefully that is it for the rants.

I played some 5/10 again tonight. It went a little better. I was beaten down to around $170. Now this is eighty dollars down. You know what? Keep your mind on where you are playing.. eighty dollars is warming up for the night! I think this is what puts most people off when progressing to 5/10. In 3/6 it is almost out, in 5/10 it means nothing. I am not saying I want to start down but I need to keep my head about me and realize what I am playing. So finally the cards come to me. Walla! I am Big Dog! BMOCT (Big Man on Card Table!)! Up almost my entire buying of $250! Sweet. So I break it down and savor another night of 5/10.

It was much less fishy tonight. A lot tighter. However the fishies came by, and became my midnight snack at the right time. A3 calling a pre-flop raise to the river! Cmon! Dummy! Ace high nothing calling the final bet against my flush. Trip Kings was the hand of the night. Flopped it.Played it slow against 3 players, then raised the turn when one guy folded before me, and bet the river. I had it vs either AA or AK. Hold on I checked. Against QQ! Ouchie. Sorry dude, but thanks for the $174 pot! Woo hoo! I think that is what made my night. I also busted out of a 20/2 tourney. Screw those though, who needs the aggravation!

You blame Bush? You couldn't say "Fuck" under any president, at least on network TV. Ask Howard Stern about the FCC fines under Clinton and Daddy Bush.

Blame the network executives (all over the ages of 100) who think that saying "Fuck" and "Shit" are worse for our kids than watching people eat horse balls on Fear Factor or killing each other on the news.

I doubt you criticized Clinton every time a word was censored on TV from 1992-2000. Can you imagine a Richard Pryor concert on network TV, regardless of the president? It would be fucking pathetic.

I do blame Bush. It is his guy Powell in charge of the FCC. There was never widespread fear of the HUGE fines that the FCC can charge now. All the fines are dealt out in a wishy-washy way. It is just stupid! I would have been ok with seeing Private Ryan with the swears cut out (I have never seen it so this might not be possible). It's just stupid when a whole medium is living in fear of what it says, whats next, the News?

I guess I'd blame Janet Jackson.

Her stunt was the culmination of years of TV pushing the limits. Of course in any system, corrections in the other direction are usually a bit too strong and that's what you're seeing now - overreactions.

I'd blame Janet's nasty boob.

They showed South Park the Movie on Comedy Central a couple weeks ago uncut. I thought that was odd.

Curssed Boob! heh. I see it as really the cycle of society, we go free and wild (60's), then deside abstinance is better, then free again! I might admit I am being hard on Bush. It is his agenda to remove anything that he find's "Immoral". Vague laws like that are dangerous and it is easy to gain support by pressing the issue against highly visible show's you do not like. He is the harbringer of a slight shift in the country to being more conservative. I still do not like it.

Comedy Central is a Pay channel so they are not governed by the FCC. Like HBO, Sci-Fi, etc.. Cirrus satalite radio is another example of escaping the goverment regulations. So I guess I cannot complain too loudly if it costs me $30 a month for freedom.

Still, blaming Bush is a reach. Saving Private Ryan is a little heavy for primetime network viewing, even if it were to be censored for language. The telling of the story is in the violence and the horrors of war, and broadcast network TV has traditionally punted on this. Of course, they're willing to put absolute shit like "Desperate Housewives" on their network, but a realistic depiction of war is taboo... That's just stupid old farts in charge of programming, not presidential interference.

But Eva Longoria is still the bomb!

There are a lot of people who want to sanitize TV to "protect" the kids. As far as I know, there's little conclusive evidence that violence and sexuality on TV does anything in shaping the mental and emotional development of kids. Video games might be another story. But either way, parents ought to do their own censoring.

On balance, the Janet incident shouldn't have happened since there was no way that a parent could have anticipated it; at the same time, I wonder how much of a difference there is between someone dressing and moving in suggestive ways and someone exposing some skin while dressing and moving in suggestive ways. Would a parent want their ten year old daughter emulating Janet Jackson, exposed or covered? Or their ten year old son for that matter. ;)

Oh, right, I forgot the point.

So if there were adequate warning about the realistic depiction of death, then I don't see why anyone should complain about showing the film. What I would protest is the sappy bookending of the movie with Ryan going to visit the cemetary. If I were a network executive, I'd edit that part out. Gotta protect the audience, you know.

As my government professor said the other day, it's pretty sad when Tito is the most respectable member of the Jackson family...
