You want enough chips to cap it on every street when you start each hand, of course, in case you pick up a monster. But beyond that, it isn't very important.

The thing that IS important is how other players perceive you, and your stack is, whether you like it or not, a part of that. I took a while to think about this, and if you're interested the full post is at http://foolandhismoney.blogspot.com/2004/09/at-long-last-tacking-table-selection.html.-EVhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00478885947241197856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095439510050240242004-09-17T09:45:00.000-07:002004-09-17T09:45:00.000-07:00Back when I was doing moderately well at .5/1, I w...Back when I was doing moderately well at .5/1, I would bring 30xBB to the table, and LEAVE if I got below 10xBB. My reasoning is that if I got down to as low as 12-15x, I would still have enough to push a strong hand without going to -0-. If you're allowing yourself to get to ZERO, you're shortchanging yourself. What if you're down to 6xBB and you get a premium hand (AA, AK, KK). You're gonna want to be able to push it for all it's worth, and you can't.Toddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16071844063721894753noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095434008220444302004-09-17T08:13:00.000-07:002004-09-17T08:13:00.000-07:00I would say the answer should be completely differ...I would say the answer should be completely different for No-Limit than Limit. I think it's less critical in Limit. As long as you have enough to call a capped hand the whole way, you should be fine.

For No-limit it's a whole different story. You want enough to be able to capitalize on a big hand, but not put too much of your bankroll in jeopardy. In No-limit games I bring in 20 times the big blind and increase my buy in if the play seems appropriate. I never buy in for the full allowed amount. I find it's MUCH easier to get called with a monster when you are all-in for a smaller amount. I like to rathole often for this reason as well.DuggleBogeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02919663542675107189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095368642986155912004-09-16T14:04:00.000-07:002004-09-16T14:04:00.000-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12979724816467346291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095368622475801812004-09-16T14:03:00.000-07:002004-09-16T14:03:00.000-07:00I normally sit down with 30BB. If you get 30 BB beat out of you, its pretty safe to say you are the fish or you are having some horrific luck. I don't think there is much difference though in the 20-30 range.

As for large stacks making you look good, not only do I not buy into the argument but online it really doesn't have as much psychological effect as sitting down at a table and saying a wall of chips in front of your opponent. When someone sits down with that much, my first thought is "Ooh more for me to take home" not "Damn, he must be good."Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12979724816467346291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095367516424760282004-09-16T13:45:00.000-07:002004-09-16T13:45:00.000-07:00The rule of thumb seems to be 20X the BB. This may actually not be a good guide for NL though.Andres Silvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04216375546624626774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7410122.post-1095365470491523132004-09-16T13:11:00.000-07:002004-09-16T13:11:00.000-07:00Jeremy at Love and Casino War had a good post abou...Jeremy at Love and Casino War had a good post about that.

http://loveandcasinowar.com/blogarch/000567.php

The concensus seems to be 20x the BB.AlCantHanghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05773186329404056551noreply@blogger.com
