Stud Hand

Did I screw this up badly. My thinking was I had a monster draw on 5th street so I should get as much money in the pot as possible. I missed everything which in itself is not unusual. When do you jam and when do you let the foot off the gas here?

You were pretty much a coinflip on 5th street but your position feels much stronger unless you know he's rolled up. If he has trips for high your low (if it comes) will be a lock, and your high draw is still very live. If he's jamming at you with two pair your equity is near 70% on 5th. I'd probably play the hand exactly the same way.

You might be able to save one BB on 6th by not leading when you brick, since given previous action he is very, very unlikely to fold and it's hard to imagine how the Ks helps your hand, so if he knows he's ahead the raise is a no-brainer (since you can't have a low yet).

Calling a bet on the river with a pair of 3s is about the cryingest call you can possibly make, but given the size of the pot, in a live game I probably wouldn't even look at my 7th street card before calling. (Though since my board was high I guess I'd have to look and see if I felt like betting.)

Waffles, I would have played this hand exactly like you did. I generally bet my strong draws on 4th and 5th street just like you did. Missing entirely on 6th and 7th, and even getting counterfeited along the way, is just part of playing stud poker. It's kinda like playing pocket 6s in holdem, and then the board comes AA88 and you lose to a guy with King-high. Shit happens. I think you played the hand just right. Sometimes when you're on a large draw through 4th street in stud, you just know you're going to take it through to the end.

I agree with grinditout. I rarely (maybe never) raise the bring in, even with rolled trips or 3 wheel cards - because you want everyone staying in the hand. As soon as you make your hand, then you start jamming.

When your opponent raised the bring in in front of you, alarms should be ringing about his hand - at least a pair of aces or kings, perhaps three to a low and flush, or trips.

I'm also not a fan of the crying call on 7th street. You missed your draws, based on how the opponent is betting, I would let it go and save the bet.

Like abs said, you're low is pretty much a lock if it hits since the 2d is out there (I think) and they'd need a well-diguised hand to win the low...like that Razz hand I posted about. Yeah, but save that last bet...I agree. But I would have played it the same way...at lower stakes, even a raise on 3rd will not necessarily push people out as I've seen. But I don't know much, so there you go.

Since your opponent jammed on fourth after bricking, he fairly obviously has a high hand. I don't think that there is any chance that a pair of threes wins on the end.

I would call on third, especially since the starting hand is so strong that you can probably call a bet on fourth in a multi-way pot if you brick.

Jamming fourth and fifth is good, although you should at least be able to consider the possibility that your opponent started rolled up.

With that type of premium starting hand, get more people in the pot then ram and jam when pot size almost forces them to call down (hopefully the cards cooperate and fill in your hand).

So much to say on this hand and I'm glad you posted it. Maybe you can toss me an email...my break-down would be a page or so.

As for what some people wrote....errr...I'm not sure about some of their take...for instance, I want to raise with rolled up 2's thur 9's for the most part. If there are two big cards behind me and they call or raise I know that only one of their cards needs to hit for me to be dead, so I'm pushing the shit out of them. So much to talk about here.

FYI I'm with the Rooster 100% here. I don't think it's optimal strategy never to raise the bringin on third street in Stud. With many of your strong hands (in particular high starting hands) I think it is best to raise it up early on. Remember the ultimate idea of hilo is to scoop the pot, not just win one side of it, so it is to your advantage to get rid of the players as early as possible who might draw out to beat your hand.

I also like to raise with my "three suited babies" hands, as they have such a good chance of winning one or both ways. Again I'm thinking let's try to get some of the hands out now who might draw to beat me in one direction or the other by the time the hand is done.

In my experience, if you never raise until your hand is made, then you have let the guy with the pair of Aces stay in until 5th street, when as the earlier commenters explained (and I agree), he might now be priced in to call through to the end against your rolled-up 9s, say, and then hit a third Ace on 6th or 7th and beat you.

For me stud is kinda like Holdem in this respect -- you can't never raise without a made hand, or #1 you will be exploitable with this kind of a pattern, and #2 you're going to get drawn out on by some people who would have just folded to earlier aggression from you.

Just my two cents of course.
