First Try at 50-NL
So I figured I would try out the 50/NL tables for a night. I was a little nervous. My bankroll is a little small for it. I basically had Satan and the Angel both screaming at me to stop being so fucking passive. You know your not playing right when both sides are yelling at you. Rav even jumped in for a few quick jabs.
Anyway I can not say I played aewsome at 50/NL but I did get my first stacking. A guy sat down who really should not be playing 50/NL. I have taken out his name to protect the innocent. I think I may have overplayed this hand but knowing the player I knew he was willing to be stacked with TPTK and I went with that read.

We had so many limpers and people never respected my raises so I decide to push it up to eight bucks. I swear to you I had pot raised KK 4 times before and gotten 1-2 callers AND every time the flop had an Ace. I of course pot bet and took it down. I even re-raised once and took that down. So here I raise to $8 to hopefully thin the field or maybe get someone to overcommit with QQ.
*** FLOP *** [Js 2h 7d]
SirFWALGMan bets $18.75
OverplaysTP: OMG
OverplaysTP has 15 seconds left to act
OverplaysTP calls $18.75
Nothing scary on the flop so I pot it. I get called by this guy. I know he hit his jack. I just know it. I am not sure how. I decide to hopefully end the hand right here. By the passive call I am even more sure he has something like AJ/KJ.
*** TURN *** [Js 2h 7d] [5s]
SirFWALGMan bets $48.40, and is all in
OverplaysTP calls $22.50, and is all in
SirFWALGMan shows [As Ac]
OverplaysTP shows [Qd Jh]
Uncalled bet of $25.90 returned to SirFWALGMan
Holy shit? I can not beleive I got called? Did I misread the hand? Does he have JJ? I may have just made a HUGE mistake.
*** RIVER *** [Js 2h 7d 5s] [5d]
SirFWALGMan shows two pair, Aces and Fives
OverplaysTP shows two pair, Jacks and Fives
Waylon Uranus adds $5
SirFWALGMan wins the pot ($98.25) with two pair, Aces and Fives

Good solid read and I get paid off. It makes my night and the bankroll skyrockets to a whole $667 and around $100 on Stars. Did I overplay this hand though? I think I might have. The read and having played this person before helped but that does not mean he does not have J2 for two pair or something?
If the person who I had this hand against is reading this I really mean this seriously. You need to stop falling in love with TP. I mean did you think I would raise that much with air? I just do not see going to war for your entire stack with QJo? I want you to do well in poker but you HAVE to plug this leak right now. Hell, I am feeling like I overplayed this hand and I had a pretty good hand going. Who know's maybe the person had a bad day or was totally sloshed. I have seen him consistantly do this kind of thing though and hope that they will stop.

IMHO, sometimes when you do not get the respect you need with a raise, you overplay a bit to make the players pay for their mistakes. In other words, you were able to maximize the value of your hand. It was not overplayed, you got someone to to commit to a mistake and you got paid!

Perfect storm.
You got paid off by a lesser hand.
If you were playing a LAG game, this is your reward for playing that type of game.
Just be cautious that you WILL get action like this and suckouts may come more frequently, but you should come out ahead at the end.

You had no reason to believe that your hand wasn't good. I'm guessing you never saw the guy slowplay anything, so that gives you more incentive to for his whole stack.
Well played, Waffles!

I disagree with the idea of raising to thin the field. I think in terms of raising to get the most money in the pot. Not exactly the same thing.

I'm with DP in thinking you played it perfectly. You made the correct read, went with it and were proved right.
Not sure about wanting the villian to stop playing like he does though.I'd be looking for him at every opporunity...

Now you know why I have written so many blog entries on OVERBETTING for VALUE - this is a CLASSIC example. Well done - soon you'll be hopping with the big boys at $10/20.

Weird...I had not read this post until just now (Tuesday afternoon), but I also played 50NL last night and wrote about having the devil and the angel on my shoulders whispering in my ear. That is just really weird that I write that and then come over and see you wrote nearly the same thing the day before.
Twilight Zone.

Must be plagerism.. Of Course my Devil is Fluxer and my Angel is Don. lol.

Regarding Chilly's comment...
I tend to think of that rationale in limit games, not NL.
In NL...When I can get heads up with someone, thus increasing my odds of winning the hand by thinning the field, and still be able to double my stack by stacking someone else, that's just gravy. If 3 or 4 people are in the pot I can probably win a big pot, but I'm more likely to play the hand differently (more cautious) because there are many more ways to be beat when 2 or more players are in the hand.
In Limit...I'm more likely to want more people in the pot and build a pot cause I know I need those people in the pot to make it worth the action. I also know, even with more people in the pot, the type of hands I will play in those situations can be totally different from my NL strategy.
They are just two entirely different animals...
Might make for a good discussion or post...
