I hate this play

I stacked someone in NLHE last night. Except I think I played the hand all wrong. I am dealt AA in the MP with some limpers and I raise it on up. I get one caller and the flop comes Jxx. He pushes and I insta-call. His JT is no goot, especially when I turn another Ace. I do not like my play here. Not because I called with the best hand but because I insta-called. I think you need to consider what might beat you. Take into account the player. I may have made the same call but I hate the speed at which I made the call. Sure the massive overbet seemed like a weak ass move with a crappy top pair but I love stacking people with Aces who do not think.

It is a difficult hand. If I am playing against someone who I KNOW can not fold Aces Drizz who I respect alot said to me: Nobody pushes a set there. I push a monster on that flop sometimes. I get paid. I laugh. It all depends on my read of the persons ability to laydown TPTK. I guess what I am hung up on is the instinctual pissing match you get into when someone shows a ton of strength against a hand you consider strong. It was an instant call and a primordial response to aggression. Not necessarily a good move. Oh well.

I did make a nice play last night by reading the hand history. I have 77 on a Q65 board. It is checked around. Another small card hits and one guy bets small. I call. The river is yet another small card. The guy pots it. I think about the hand. He does not get excited until everyone checks around the first time. Even then his bets are small. I put him on second pair: 66, and think I have him beat. I call. I am right. Oh well at least I can think sometimes.

That one is pretty much read dependant. A good player will obviously not insta-jam when he flops a set but there’s so many donks out there that you don’t really know, you know?

Yup. It makes it hard when people will jam with TPSK and monsters. I guess calling can not be too wrong.

Look at the bright side. Maybe your subconcious is taking over part of your play. But basically unless he was thinking at level 3 or 4 it is safe to rule out anything other than AA, KK, QQ, an under pair or TPTK.

You don't relate the size of the pot relative to his remaining stack. How much of an over bet was the push? How much would he had behind if he potted it? Maybe he was trying to drive out two overs, thinking you had AK or AQ?

Maybe you are both just a couple of donks and you happend to win this hand.

I agree with Chilly...add in a flush-draw if there was one on the board, but I assume you purposely didn't mention that since their prolly wasn't.
You're gonna get his whole stack anyway, since he's check-pushing any bet you might make.
So the end result is the same regardless of how you played it. Sets are whatever, 12% to hit, so safe to say you had the best hand when he pushed. Also, you hit the redraw to top set as well, if he did have one.
Are you sure you're not describing the hand you got 50$ from me on?

I agree with you Waffles. This is EXACTLY the hand that the overbet for value is meant to punish: A premium pocket pair or an inferior made draw if done on turn or river.

So I like the fact that in retrospect the insta-call has you pondering it. It gets back to what Fuel likes to label "Knowing Your Opponent". Are they smart enough to overbet for value? Or no.

Who says victory teaches us nothing?

If ever a hand was made for instacalling, it's aces. Still, it's not a bad idea to think about it for a moment. He limped initially, so unless you put him on slowplaying a monster, he obviously didn't have much of a hand. He doesn't sound like the kind of player with the deviousness to slowplay any pocket paint, and Artiste is right, why in the hell would you jam if you flopped top set? I'd be more concerned about him flopping 2 pair (Jx). Just my .02, and congrats on stacking him.

This is so why pushing monsters gets you paid in this game.. nobody even has a second though about Insta-Calling? I know pushing *may* not make me money at the "higher" levels but 100/NL and less everyone thinks the same way "Aces are gold Jerry, Always Push them". I am not sure how to figure out when not to but I HATE the idea that you usually push Aces post-flop.

I'm fairly certain this call was merely instinct for you. You knew you were ahead and you called.
