The Fat Lightning Diet

I am going to try and eat better. I hope this will give me more energy and make me feel better as I lose a little weight. I am at 193, 5"8 right now. I have scarecrow arms and the big heart attack tummy. Women love to rub it though. Go lower ladies! Go lower!!!

I find it hard to fix my eating habits a little. I will describe what I do and you can all make nasty comments. Should be fun. One thing that can help a little is my waking up early. Lately I force myself up around 5AM. It cuts down on my sleep sometimes because no freakin way I am going to bed at 9PM... but it gives me more time in the morning and allows me to eat some breakfast if I want to. I have been doing this schedule for the entire year.

So yesterdays eating went something like this.

Morning
Honey Nut Cheerio's
Coke

Lunch
Coke
8pc Sushi Spicy Tuna

After Snack (I was hungry!)
Fritos
Coke

Home
Coke
Stouffer's Stuffed Green Peppers
Girl Scout Cookies
Coke

So we can take the easy stuff first. I should remove the coke from my body. I might have a diabetic attack when I do this but it will probably help. I should also keep up with the breakfast thing. I can tell it speeds up my metabolism because I get really hungry by lunch time.

I eat a lot of frozen dinners. I am usually really tired when I get home from work and it is hard to get the energy to make a full meal. I was reading Lightnings reccomendations and he said he cut out sugars and salts as well as fat and red meats. Almost everything I eat is salty.

Like I try lean Cuisine from the store and it seems good but is like 550mg salt good for you? It seems not. Lunch is a big problem too.. half the time I have no idea what is in my food. Sushi probably has salt issues with the soy sauce and rice makes you fat and tired right? gahh!

I order these soups sometime at work.. it's Pork Wanton, all kinds of veggies, in a chicken or vegetable broth, with like some hot sauce and garlic.. I think it must have a lot of salt and the pork wanton is probably not healthy.. the other white meat? no? Blah! This is why I HATE trying to adjust my diet. Eating lunch at work is hard and I am not sure how much I would like taking something to work.

Gary is doing a good diet too one of his keys that Lightbulb did not mention in his diet was cutting out processed flours. I have heard about this. So how do you fricken go about doing that? Is wheat bread good but white bread bad? Is this a screw anything honkey colored thing? I dunno.

Perhaps I need to find some guidelines to how much intake I should be having in a reasonable healthy diet and work towards that... More water (which I HATE the taste of) and less coke would be an easy good start also... Peace.

The Hacker's Diet: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html

The major diet takeaway is this: less calories in than calories out = weight loss.

waffles, i went from ~200 to 170 in about a year by cutting out cokes (i had a similar habit like you, no coffee but lots of soda), eating a healthier lunch, and managing snacks better.
i went cold turkey on the soda for a while (and saw fast results), but now i have a coke zero when i want the sugar/soda taste, i prefer it over diet coke.
if you are fine with having the same thing daily (looks like you are), then here's the routine i used.
english muffin/jelly for breakfast.
100 calorie snack mid morning.
salad for lunch with chicken strips on it.
2 more snacks in the afternoon.
a REASONABLE dinner.
no late snacks.
for my lunches, i got a tupperware bowl that holds half a bag of the salad bags from the grocery store, plus a 1/3 of the perdue shortcuts chicken. throw some parmesan cheese on it and a low-cal dressing, shake it up and eat at my desk every day. and it doesn't take long to make every morning. it's very simple and an easy routine that i followed every day last year.
i used myfitnesspal app on my iphone to track what i was eating and was shocked to see how many calories were wasted on soda or drinks every day.

I advise you do the math first. Figure out for your height/weight what your caloric intake should be to lose at a moderate pace. On days when you exercise, those calories get added back in so you can have an extra snack. If you don't exercise, you don't get the snack.

myfitnesspal works for me, but there are others like livestrong. by having the same stuff regularly, it makes for entering the calories easier over time.

You want to lose weight so you look good naked, same as everyone.

I'm not skinny but I've been pretty good losing 15 lbs since the middle of last year.

A 20 oz Coke has 250 calories. If you drink 5 in a day you are drinking half the total amount of calories you should have in a day. I switched to diet a while ago. It wasn't easy to adjust but if you power through the adjustment then sugar sodas start to taste disgusting. That,s not to say diet is good for you, it's just not as bad as regular.

Don't worry about salt. There's never been a single scientific study that demonstrares that salt is bad for you. Even the most generous studies have been able to lower blood pressure by only one point by limiting salt. Salt is good for you.

Other than that just try to stay away from processed things. Almost anything white is bad. White flour, sugar, etc. Processed meat, packaged foods are loaded with carbs. Calorie counting works, mostly because carbs have tons of calories.

Just keeping track of what you consume everyday is a good start. Blog it and people will insult you for it and you'll do better to show them up. Start a new trend, the blog diet.

Good ideas from everyone. Some keys:

1) Coke has to go. Sub diet soda if nothing else. Diet Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, and Canada Dry Ginger Ale taste about as close to regular soda as you can get.

Old aside: Why does Dr Pepper come in a bottle? 'Cause his wife died

2) Almost anything you buy at the grocery store or out to eat that has been "prepared" has a ton of salt and/or fat. The key is taking the time to fix healthy stuff yourself -- about the best investment you can make.

3) What you do has to work for you. If it doesn't, you'll just be back to old habits soon.

Good luck!

It took me a year to lose a hundred pounds, but my key was cutting out most processed foods. No more dinner from a box. I cook once a week so that I can throw together dinners the rest of the week. Freeze stuff that I can take to work with me for lunch - like frozen boxed dinners but real food. :) Here's my old "how I did it" post. Gotta get back to some of those things... gained back 10# over the holidays... meh. Too many donuts. (At least they were made from scratch!) http://www.epicorganic.net/2011/01/01/2010-how-i-did-it/

Hackers diet is a good read. Makes sense that exercise is better for getting healthy than losing weight. Some sensible things in there from an engineer to an engineer. :).

Waffles, I'm going to respectfully disagree with Duggle about salt. High salt content forces your body to keep more water to maintain proper cellular salinity. A low-ish salt diet will let you lose a bunch of easy water weight. Although bear in mind that if you cut salt out of your body completely, you'll die horribly. So it's always that oft-spoke of middle ground.

One random salt note... if you switch to making a lot of your own food and cutting out the processed stuff, you can actually flavor things with salt and still be getting way less overall than you would from the boxed crap (and it tastes so much better!).

Go to the gym
3 times per week
30 minute min each time.

Treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical, something.

Get your blood pumping, get your heart rate up, get your metabolism up.

do some minor weight lifting to build muscle.
Shit, just do Situps and pushups at your house 3 days per week, try to gradually increase how many you can do. Build muscle.

Muscle burns more calories than Fat does.
Minor exercise will show you good improvement as will changing your eating habbits

BTW 550mg of salt is not good for a single serving of anything. I forget who said it first, but stay away from pre-packaged food, it's naturally bland so it's loaded with salt to compensate.

If you can't cook, or cook well, get in the habit of learning how to cook chops of meat and steam vegetables. You'd be surprised how little you need to know about the art of cooking to put a healthy, delicious meal in front of you.

Yah, I found the Hacker's Diet right up my alley as it was from someone who spoke my language.

Salt - there are a few well-known chefs who are railing against the anti-sodium trend. Yes, processed foods, fast food, etc, all have waaay too much salt, but salt itself isn't bad for you, and is required to, you know, live. Plus, salt enhances flavours. As always, making your own food will cut salt intake dramatically.

Diet shit - Don't. Artificial sweeteners are evil. I'm not even talking about theories about what they do to you, but a bit more realistic things. They fool your body into thinking you've consumed sugar. This triggers a few reactions so your body can process said sugars. Except, they aren't there, so your body now craves more. Studies show that diet drinks and foods actually increase appetite and hurt weight-loss in the long run. Plus there has been some evidence that they could also increase risk of heart disease and stroke. I'd say you're better off cutting down the Coke than switching wholesale to diet. Although quitting cold turkey is obviously best.

Aldi has some meals in a bag that are vegies and shrimp or chicken. Both have a sauce. As meals in a bag go, they are tasty. Most stores have frozen Oriental items. They serve cholesterol and calorie counting rather well for those not planning to get on Iron Chef.

Yeah I really think that Diet Drinks eat the fuck out of your body somehow... teeth, bones, liver... blah... Those things are deadly...

My favorite cooking discovery was roasting veggies. You can spritz just about any veggies in a little olive oil and toss 'em on a cookie sheet.... bake in the oven. Times vary, but slow-n-low works well for everything I've tried. 350F for anywhere from 20-40 minutes, depending what it is. Super easy, super yummy. I roast broccoli, green beans (then eat 'em like fries), sweet potatoes, cauliflower, eggplant, zucchini, you name it. I've roasted it. My other favorite investment - the Griddler Jr. It's a countertop grill thing that I find to work way better than the George Foreman I used to have. Grilled asparagus FTW!!! Spray with a little olive oil, toss in some seasoning (I love the McCormick "Perfect Pinch" veggie seasoning), grill. 4 minutes on medium for asparagus. Super easy. Nom nom nom. Oh - and KALE CHIPS!!!! Best vegetable ever.
