General Question

I have been asking myself the following question since I have been bubbling a few SNGs and MTTs lately. Does this mean I am doing it right or wrong? If I find myself racing tens against AJ on the bubble.. or jamming A7 into a QJ and bubbling does it mean I am being too aggressive or does it mean I am playing to win the whole thing and it will even out in the end.

We will not get into "What kind of retard re-jams AJ on the bubble to an EP raise with a fucking JackAce". We can save that discussion until later. :P.

I know the line, "I'm there to win it and not..."

But consider the circumstances further. You lasted through a large field and have reached the return point. Is that the point you want a gamble -- especially if there are people who have you well covered and can gamble?

We really need to get to the payoff to gamble our whole stack.

That said, short and 10's isn't horrid. But, it also foldable with discipline. This one becomes a personal decision too.

Senilily yours... :)

You need to pick up the horseshoe that dropped out of Jo C's butt and squeeze it hard between your butt cheeks.

That is the means of those who succeed with A rag.

Of course there is risk of kharmic retribution of A rag punishing you

Good question. I have the same problem and I'm also looking for an answer.

Not that I'm a SNG player, but I believe the ICM model says a call by QJ with a similar stack size vs. your shove is light. There's a lot ahead of QJ that can be shoving those spots... i.e. Ax & Kx. Would you be asking the question about A7 vs. QJ if you had won the flip? I'd think that you're doing the right thing in that spot.

TT vs. AJ - I'm not sure how the action was since you didn't describe it. If you're open shoving TT & getting called by a similarly stacked AJ, I'd say that's a questionable call by the AJ, but not really sure what ICM says. Other way around, and I'd imagine TT is a fold facing a shove for your tournament / in the money life.

All of this sounds like a boo hoo woe unto me sob story. Variance sux.

Well I think you are making a mistake to compare the two. With a MTT unless you are a severe short stack playing to make the money in IMHO, a mistake. You want to go for that final table and eventually the win because itm means shyt in an MTT. As for a SnG you should be playing to cash first then go for the win. The money distribution is different and because of the lesser amount of chips in play playing a short stack once you get itm is not as crippling as playing it in a MTT. Just my two cents.

Very much depends on stack sizes but generally I'd be jamming far wider than tens/AJ in the high blinds stage of a sng.I would fold tens if there's a very short stack at the table and I'm facing a shove from another player.

Poker Meister pretty much nails it with his post and Wolfshead is also spot on about making the money being a priority.( which doesn't mean easing off if you're the big stack )

If you're playing the same games take notes on how tight/ wide the other regs are push/calling and adjust accordingly.

Oh and play a ton of games because even at a decent 5% roi you'll be earning peanuts unless you multi-table well.( due to variance)

Run good Sir!

I'll actually be completely serious for once:

Wolfshead is closest to right here re MTTs vs. a one or two table SnG.

But, even when you are playing well in SnGs, you're going to run into a lot of annoying bubble spots and hit streaks where you can't win a flip or a 60/40, or even hold an 80/20. It comes with the territory and you just have to ride it out.

When I'm running normally, I might be cashing 40%, bubbling 10-15% and hitting 20-30% ROI. And I'm not an expert, I'm just slightly profitable - but there's still a lot of ARRRGH moments that come with running that "well".

In general, though:

- It's better to jam than call off, especially if you think you'll be flipping. Muppets can always make mistakes both ways when you shove on them.
- Ax completely sucks. I'd rather shove with QJ or something small and live than something that will be dominated when called. Plus, implied tilt factor when you get there... ;-)
- You can farm a smaller stack than you think. If you have to work a 5-6BB stack on the bubble, it's not as hopeless as you think. A lot of people play these SnGs horribly, especially on the bubble.
- Above all, never worry when you get it in good. You controlled what you can, what the cards end up doing after that are just cosmic blips.

You're smarter and better than this.
You already know that.
