Is Tony G an Asshole?
I love this question from High Stakes Poker. Is Tony from the streets an asshole? I think MANY MANY poker players think that the game is WAR. In war anything goes. I think Tony is one of those guys who gets caught up in pissing people off to make them make mental mistakes. We have all been at the table with "that guy" and a lot of people will go gunning for someone who is being an asshole. Playing a different style than you normally would is -EV and so effective. However most people at the table believe that poker has a set of rules and etiquette that should be followed. I actually think less people every day follow these unspoken rules and poker has regressed into a bunch of spoiled kids calling each other names. What is your opinion? Is poker WAR or do we have room for civilized play? Is Tony G an Asshole or is he just trying to get an advantage over other players? Are his antics good or bad for poker? Do you give a fuck at all?

he's definitely an asshole...taunting someone you just took money from is bad form.
it's not like we don't see it all the time...i normally have 4-6 cash game tables up and if people are chatting, it's just one person harassing another. it's never friendly banter. it's just pathetic and you see it all the time.
...i find myself blocking a lot of people's chat lately.

Tony G is probably an asshole when it comes to competition. I always say that it is best to play your style of game which depends on your personality. My guess is that personality-wise, he's an asshole when it comes to competition, and it comes out when he plays poker. All that said, etiquette in poker is over-rated. Poker is an every man for himself game, and etiquette is negligible.

From what I've seen, he's an asshole.
As to whether his antics are good or bad for poker depends on your individual poker utopia (which isn't likely to ever occur). In my poker utopia, you wouldn't see players berating other players or rubbing wins (or losses) into each others' faces. Thus, Tony G's antics are bad for poker in my little happy world.
But isn't he one of the guys responsible for pokernews.com, and assembling the all-star cast of Dr. Paully and crew? I think pokernews.com is good for poker, regardless of whether or not Tony G is an asshat at the tables.
Can it be a push?

I was more thinking along the lines if acting like a child is good for the game.. not Tony in particular..
I am sure he is good with his friends and the people he works with and he has done some good things like pokernews.. does not necessarily excuse his rude behavior at the tables..
But I get the sense he acts that way at the tables for the psychological advantage I talked about before..

From what I've read about him away from the table Tony G is a really nice guy. It is obviously an act. And it works so well.
I saw a final table he was on when he managed to get someone to go all-in with KJo against his made hand. But that's how he does it. It's pretty annoying, but sometimes very effective.

From what I have seen I get the feeling that he is an Ass.
I think there is a place for class in the game. But that is how We were raised.
I think he is an ass but Hevad Kahn isn't. not that I agree with his antics either.

I like to see people get off their games, and I do everything I can to get them there. Mostly showing bluffs and then adding fuel to the fire if they flip out.
But I agree, just rubbing in bad beats or critizing someones play is over done and useless.

Tony G has perfected the art of the asshole at the tables and it works for him. Some people are just classless idiots, tho. Number one example: Hevad Khan. It's really embarrasing how some people act at the tables and I don't think many are doing to get any possible mental edge, they are just naturally assholes and I hate them.
